In that address, I emphasized the enduring educational, scientific, and cultural ties between Africa and Soviet/Russian institutions, and the responsibility of alumni to translate knowledge into national development.

The address resonated deeply with participants. One senior member, moved by the passion and clarity of the message, remarked that I spoke like “the grandson of Kwame Nkrumah”—a reference to Ghana’s first President and one of Africa’s most vibrant Afrocentric leaders, renowned for his powerful communication, Pan-African vision, and belief in science and education as tools for liberation and progress.

That moment was both humbling and affirming. It reinforced my conviction that effective communication is as important as technical expertise, especially when addressing Africa’s future.

Engaging the Youth: Inspiring Interest in Nuclear Science

On the second day of the forum, I delivered a presentation focused on how young people can develop interest in nuclear science. The motivation for this talk stemmed from a persistent global challenge: the widespread misunderstanding of nuclear science.

Across Ghana, Africa, and even globally, the word “nuclear” is often immediately associated with:

Atomic bombs

Nuclear warfare

Proliferation of dangerous materials

While these concerns are historically grounded, they represent only a small and often exaggerated fraction of what nuclear science truly encompasses today.

Nuclear Science Beyond Bombs: A Tool for Development

In my presentation, I emphasized that Ghana is a responsible member of the international nuclear community. Ghana is a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), a landmark international agreement aimed at:

Preventing the spread of nuclear weapons

Promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy

Encouraging global nuclear disarmament

This commitment reflects Ghana’s firm stance on peaceful, safe, and regulated use of nuclear technology.

More importantly, I highlighted the transformative role of nuclear science in everyday life, including:

🏥 Medicine

Nuclear medicine for diagnosis and treatment of cancer

Medical imaging (PET, SPECT)

Radiotherapy for cancer management

🌾 Agriculture

Food irradiation to extend shelf life

Mutation breeding to develop climate-resilient crops

Pest control through sterile insect techniques

⚡ Energy

Nuclear power as a low-carbon, reliable energy source

Potential contribution to Africa’s energy security

💧 Environment and Industry

Water resource management

Industrial radiography

Environmental radiation monitoring

These applications demonstrate that nuclear science is not a threat by default—it is a powerful development tool when managed responsibly.

A Call for Open-Mindedness and Scientific Literacy

One of the strongest messages I shared with participants—especially the youth—was the need for open-mindedness. Fear often thrives where understanding is absent. Africa cannot afford to shy away from advanced science due to misconceptions.

If Africa is to compete globally, solve its healthcare challenges, ensure food security, and meet rising energy demands, we must embrace science, including nuclear science, with knowledge, regulation, and purpose.

Conclusion: The Responsibility of Educated Africans

The forum in Dar es Salaam reaffirmed my belief that educated Africans have a responsibility beyond personal success. We must communicate, educate, and inspire—especially the next generation.

As alumni of Soviet and Russian universities, we carry a legacy of rigorous scientific training. The challenge now is to translate that legacy into impact, shaping narratives, influencing policy, and mentoring young Africans to see science not as something to fear, but as something to master.

The future of nuclear science in Africa must be peaceful, transparent, youth-driven, and development-oriented—and that future begins with informed conversations like the ones we had in Dar es Salaam.

Conferences & Workshops VII International (XX Regional) Scientific Conference on Technogenic Systems and Environmental Risk I had the honor of […]

["post-227","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
